Beached: A life-size palm tree and a fallen coconut are made from acrylic,. A speaker inside the tree and a speaker in the coconut places the two in conversation. The palm berates its offspring for a variety of personal and moral failings, including castigations such as "You are hopeless, you will never amount to anything." The coconut responds as if not paying attention, representing the typified unruliness of childhood or defenses of adolescence. Beached not only addresses the communication problems between generations, but also larger questions of human potential and free will. Through the clashing iconographies of paradise and shipwreck, this installation underscores the ambivalent paradoxes of the human condition.back
